Authorities have not determined the identity of the man fatally shot by San Diego police after he shot at officers and led them on a wild chase from Chula Vista to the Mexican border.
The man was shot Saturday on the 805 freeway near Camino de la Plaza when an SDPD officer found himself caught between two cars, and was ramming nearby cars in a carjacked vehicle to escape arrest, San Diego police Capt. Jim Collins said.
According to the Chula Vista Police Department, officers found a stolen pickup around 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Good Nite Inn, 225 Bay Blvd., and put it under surveillance.
About two hours later, the man and a woman got into the vehicle, and when officers moved in, the man rammed an occupied patrol cruiser, according to the CVPD. The woman, whom police identified as Salina Galindo of San Diego, was thrown from the van and arrested.
The man backed out of the parking lot, crashing through a metal barrier, and fired five shots through his front windshield while traveling in reverse down Bay Boulevard, police said.
The driver crashed his vehicle and ran into the Goodrich Aerostructures Group property at 850 Lagoon Drive, where he demanded car keys and cash from an employee, police said.
Collins said the man ran off after a struggle and stole a large delivery van.
He drove the van onto streets in the city of San Diego, where SDPD officers picked up the chase, Collins said.
The man ended up taking the van northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway, crashed into a southbound vehicle, carjacked another car and became stuck in traffic, Collins said.
The captain said an officer approached the suspect and fired when the man rammed the car in front of him and tried to extricate the car from the traffic jam.
He was pronounced dead inside the vehicle.
According to the Medical Examiner's Office, he is believed to be 36 years old, but his identity is unconfirmed. An autopsy is tentatively scheduled for Monday.
Galindo, 34, suffered minor injuries was arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.
