DESCANSO (CNS) - A car with a mechanical failure caught fire and sparked a brush fire that burned about one quarter acre along Interstate 8 in East County Saturday, Cal Fire said.
The blaze broke out at about 12:30 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 8 east of State Route 79, according to Cal Fire spokesman Ray Chaney.
Firefighters arrived to find a car fully engulfed in flames, Chaney said. The car fire appeared to have been caused by a mechanical malfunction.
The fire spread to a surrounding area and scorched about a quarter acre, Chaney said. The blaze was extinguished within five minutes.
Two of the three eastbound Interstate 8 lanes were blocked while firefighters knocked down the blaze.
No injuries were reported and no estimate of damage was available.
