There's a new statue of Martin Luther King, Junior in Washington DC. It has an inscription on the base of the statue that Maya Angelou says makes MLK look like "an arrogant twit." The inscription reads:
"I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."
He actually ummm, never said that. It was a paraphrase from a 1952 sermon. If you read the sermon, you can see that this sentence is completely out of context.
In the end, who cares about the statue. But it did get me to read for the first time this INCREDIBLE sermon. It's brilliant from top to bottom. PLEASE take the time to read (or listen) to it and then print it out and give it to your kids to read. We talked about it this morning at 7:00:

"But that isn't what Jesus did; he did something altogether different. He said in substance, "Oh, I see, you want to be first. You want to be great. You want to be important. You want to be significant. Well, you ought to be. If you're going to be my disciple, you must be." But he reordered priorities. And he said, "Yes, don't give up this instinct. It's a good instinct if you use it right. It's a good instinct if you don't distort it and pervert it. Don't give it up. Keep feeling the need for being important. Keep feeling the need for being first. But I want you to be first in love. I want you to be first in moral excellence. I want you to be first in generosity. That is what I want you to do."
And the good news? We have two opportunities in the next 9 days to be FIRST in love, moral excellence and generosity. First with the Navy SEAL Foundation fundraiser on Saturday morning and then the September 11th Memorial next Sunday, both on the deck of the USS Midway.
Please, let's harness our drum line instinct for good.
