Not only has the increase in government influence in our lives resulted in (or helped contribute to) the breakdown of the family (particularly the black family, as Walter Williams says, "The government has said to many young women, I am the father. And so the father, black males, have become dispensable") but the increase of government has resulted in the breakdown of religion in society.

The government - with perhaps noble motives - has slowly taken over the role of helping those in need, which has crowded out the role of the church in families, communities and the nation. Some politicians have taken advantage of this. As George Bernard Shaw said, "A government with the policy to rob Peter to pay Paul can be assured of the support of Paul." But no matter the intentions, there is no doubt that too many people today believe that ONLY the federal government can take care of the poor.

I vehemently disagree.

At 6:00 I made the argument that if the welfare state ended tomorrow and your forced contribution to the welfare state was returned, the American people would give that money to charity, and every $1,000 of private charity would accomplish more to end poverty than $10,000 spent by the nameless, faceless, soulless federal government.

It makes me upset to think that people have lost all faith in their fellow American to take care of those in need. But, we've been trained to think that only the federal government can accomplish such a virtuous enterprise:

We continued this conversation at 8:00 and asked if a welfare state can exist in a free society:

Here are the quotes we used this morning:

Gouverneur Morris, 1821 (page 32):

"There must be religion. When that ligament is torn, society is disjointed and its members perish. The nation is exposed to foreign violence and domestic convulsion. Vicious rulers, chosen by vicious people, turn back the current of corruption to its source. Placed in a situation where they can exercise authority for their own emolument, they betray their trust. They take bribes. They sell statutes and decrees. They sell honor and office. They sell their conscience. They sell their country. . . . But the most important of all lessons is the denunciation of ruin to every state that rejects the precepts of religion."

Ambroise Clement, 1852:

"If, however, we understand by society or the state the government, the question is changed altogether; and we must no longer ask whether charity being a virtue in the individual, is not equally a virtue in society, but whether it is proper, moral and advantageous to have charity practiced by the government, or whether it is even possible for the government to practice charity at all. We say not. It is very evident that Charity and fraternity are virtues only when they are free and spontaneous. State and, therefore, forced, charity is not a virtue, it is a tax."
