Every step towards tyranny is under the guise of helping people. We talked a few weeks ago about Germany in 1933 with the "Law to Remedy the Distress of the People and the Nation" and the "Order of the Reich President for the Protection of People and State." These two laws ended habeas corpus, freedom of speech, the press, property, etc. But don't worry! It was all done to protect the people and remedy their distress.
Yesterday, North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue said we should suspend elections this year so that people in DC can focus on what they do best: create jobs.
Governor Perdue is concerned about all of the factions in DC. Too many people, too many opinions, too much disagreement, discord and discontent in DC, so we need to eliminate all the obstacles to getting things done.
James Madison wrote about these factions in Federalist Number 10. He said factions are "united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community."
Because of this, some believe we should eliminate factions. And we can eliminate factions no problem. We can eliminate factions by eliminating liberty (i.e. dictators who get 99% of votes in every election. No factions, no liberty). But Madison argued that this cure is worse than the disease! The loss of liberty is worse than the existence of factions.
Governor Perdue wants to get rid of factions by eliminating our greatest defense against tyranny - elections. This is a cure worse than the disease.
The good news is James Madison told us what we should do with factions if they can't be eliminated! We talked about it at 7:00 this morning:

The ultimate point is, Governor Perdue laments the fact that DC can't solve all of our problems. The reason the federal government seems broken and unable to solve problems is it was never designed to solve problems. It was designed to protect the sovereignty of each state to allow them to solve their own problems. Big difference.
