Remember the game 2 Truths and a Lie? This is sort of like that except it's just 3 lies.

Xavier Alvarez was a council member of the Three Valley Water District Board. He claimed he was a 25 year Marine veteran, a Medal of Honor recipient and a former Chicago Blackhawk. All of those were lies. One of them (the Medal of Honor lie) is punishable up to a year in jail under the Stolen Valor Act.

Alvarez was sentenced to a $5,100 fine and 416 hours of community service.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the ruling:

"This act concerns us because of its potential for setting a precedent, whereby the government may proscribe speech solely because it is a lie...[if the law were deemed constitutional], there would be no constitutional bar to criminalizing lying about one's height, weight, age or financial status on Match.com or Facebook."

What do you think? Should lying about receiving military decorations be against the law or does this set a precedent for violating your freedom of speech? Leave your answer below!
