SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The work week got off to a blustery start Monday with the arrival of the first of a pair of cold storms expected to chill and soak the San Diego area over the next several days.

Scattered light rains dampened the county through the morning and afternoon, and will continue, off and on, overnight and through about midday Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

During the period, the snow level will drop to as low as 3,500 feet, with accumulations up to six inches deep possible in some spots, and strong surf will pound the region's beaches, the agency advised.

A high-wind warning was in effect through 3 a.m. Tuesday in the East County highlands and deserts, with gusts potentially reaching 65 mph. The NWS issued a less-serious wind advisory for coastal locations, where gusts could hit 35 mph through 10 p.m. Monday, according to meteorologists.

Over a 24-hour time span ending at 5 p.m. today, the dark clouds dropped 0.44 of an inch of precipitation at Birch Hill; 0.2 at Lake Henshaw; 0.16 at Palomar Observatory; 0.12 in Julian; and 0.11 in the Rainbow area and Santa Ysabel. Most other locales got a few hundredths of an inch of moisture or less.

The follow-up wet atmospheric pattern will arrive Wednesday and likely last through late Thursday morning, the NWS reported. Each storm should leave behind one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch of precipitation in coastal communities, one-half to three-quarters of an inch on mountain slopes and one-tenth of an inch or less in desert areas.
