Suspect arrested minutes after downtown bank robbery

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly robbed a downtown bank Tuesday morning while claiming to have a concealed gun was arrested on a nearby street corner about five minutes later.

The holdup at the Chase branch office in the 100 block of West Broadway was reported about 10:15 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Anthony Richard Munoz, 57, allegedly confronted a teller at the Chase branch office in the 100 block of West Broadway and demanded money, authorities said.

"The teller initially did not believe she was actually being robbed, so the suspect added that he was armed with a gun and repeated his demand for cash," SDPD public-affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.

The victim, who saw no weapon, handed over an undisclosed amount of money to the man, who left the bank and started walking out of the area to the east.

Less than five minutes later, a patrol officer responding to the crime spotted Munoz at a bus stop on the northeast corner of First Avenue and Broadway and took him into custody. The stolen money was recovered, Brown said.
