SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A project to widen a connector ramp from westbound state Route 905 to the northbound 805 freeway was completed two months early and for $2 million less than expected, Caltrans announced Thursday.
The $20 million project included the widening of an auxiliary lane along the 805 from the 905 to Palm Avenue, and of the Del Sol Boulevard underpass.
The interchange is part of an overall $611 million effort to improve the flow of trucks coming out of the Otay Mesa border crossing. What is currently a surface street is being transformed into a six-lane freeway.
"When the last project is completed on the corridor in late 2012, cross-border trade will have a more efficient and direct route," said Malcolm Dougherty, the acting director of Caltrans.
About 1.4 million trucks move through the Otay Mesa crossing annually, a figure projected to jump to four million by 2020, according to the state's transportation agency.
