La Mesa residents invited to be a part of city's centennial celebration

LA MESA (CNS) - Everyone in La Mesa is invited to Grossmont Center Saturday to be in an aerial photograph that will become part of the city's centennial celebration.

People will form up in the shape of the number "100" on the top of the mall's parking structure, Grossmont Center spokeswoman Tracie Plefka said.

The first 300 people to show up will receive free T-shirts, she said. To make the picture colorful, participants were urged to wear brightly colored shirts or hats that will make themselves easy to recognize.

La Mesa was incorporated Feb. 16, 1912, when the population was about 700.

Famous La Mesans include:

-- Astronaut Bill Anders, lunar module pilot for Apollo 8, the first mission to orbit the moon;

-- the late actor/director Dennis Hopper, star of the films "Easy Rider" and "Speed" and named Most Likely to Succeed at Helix High School in 1954;

-- guitarist Dave Mustaine of Metallica and Megadeath;

-- Astronaut Ellen Ochoa, deputy director of the Johnson Space Center;

-- businessman James Sinegal, the co-founder and CEO of Costco; and

-- ex-basketball star Bill Walton.
