LA MESA (CNS) - A man armed with a semi-automatic handgun tried to rob a pool hall in La Mesa Saturday, but fled without money.

About 1:55 a.m., two employees of On Cue Billiards pool hall on Parkway Drive near Buckland Street exited the business and saw a man with a black handgun running toward them, La Mesa Police Chief Ed Aceves said.

The employees immediately ran back into the pool hall and tried to lock the door. The man pointed the semi-automatic gun at the employee trying to lock the door and said, "Give me the money," Aceves said.

When the suspect saw the other employee inside the pool hall, he became nervous and fled without taking any money, he said.

Officers searched the surrounding areas with the help of a San Diego Sheriff's Department helicopter but were unable to locate the suspect.

He was described as black, 5 feet-11 inches tall, with black curly and oily hair, wearing a black baseball cap, sunglasses, a dark colored shirt, black pants, black gloves and a dark colored bandana over his face.

Anyone with information may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000, Aceves said. He asked informants to call the La Mesa Police department at (619) 667-1400 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
