SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A skydiver killed Saturday in an accident during a competition at Perris Valley Skydiving was identified as a 35-year-old San Diegan.

Sean Carey, identified as a skydiving instructor, was declared dead shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverside County Regional Medical Center, authorities said.

The accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. near Perris Valley Airport at 2091 Goetz Road.

According to a local news source, Carey, who had about 8,000 jumps under his belt and helped trained Navy SEALs, landed hard in a pond while "swooping" the ground at a high speed.

In a video on YouTube titled "Another SCarey Moment," Carey can be seen skydiving in formation with two other men, who fumble with a pilot-chute, before Carey deploys an alternate and his parachute opens. The video is tagged with the expression "Remember, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades."

Five people died in skydiving accidents originating at the airport last year and about 15 have died since 2000, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The manager of Perris Valley Skydiving told Fox News about 140,000 jumps were logged at the airport annually.

Nationwide, about 30 people die in skydiving accidents each year.

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO THE PREVIOUS STORY BELOW.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A skydiver was killed Saturday when he crashed to the ground during a competition at the Perris Valley Skydiving facility in southwestern Riverside County, according to the coroner's office.

Sean Carey, 35, of San Diego, was performing a solo maneuver when he crashed at about 9:10 a.m., said a sheriff's department spokesman.

He was taken to Riverside County Regional Medical Center, where the coroner pronounced him dead of his injuries at 9:52 a.m.

It was the sixth fatality at the Perris Valley facility since the start of 2011, according to The Press-Enterprise.

In December, an experienced 32-year-old Canadian skydiver died from a hard landing at Perris Valley. Earlier last year, four people died and one person was seriously injured in three separate skydiving incidents at the airport.

The popular skydiving facility is about 80 miles north of San Diego, near Temecula.
