San Diegans welcome home "American Idol" star

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - "American Idol" singing sensation Jessica Sanchez will give two free concerts Saturday at Eastlake High School and on the flight deck of USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.

Jessica, 16, will be paraded from Otay Lakes Road to her alma mater by the school's marching band and color guard starting about 10:15 a.m. The homecoming, which will be videotaped for broadcast on "American Idol" next week, will be in the football stadium, which holds about 6,000 people.

Sanchez, who made an appearance at Petco Park last night, was among the top three contestants on the Fox television program.

"Our community is thrilled to welcome home Jessica -- she is already Chula Vista's idol," Mayor Cheryl Cox said. "Her amazing talent and accomplishments are deserving of this grand celebration."

Eastlake Parkway will be closed in the area from 5 a.m. until noon because of the large crowd expected at the celebration, according to city officials. They encourage homemade signs, but food, beverages other than water, coolers, backpacks, umbrellas and lawn chairs will not be permitted.

Sanchez will receive a proclamation from the county of San Diego and possibly the city of San Diego aboard the USS Midway. According to the museum, she plans to sing some songs, and a Navy band will perform.

The Midway show also will be recorded for airing on "Idol."

Museum officials said plans call for her to depart the vessel via helicopter. Admission is free between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
