SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Questions linger about what prompted Chargers legend Junior Seau to commit suicide. Now new reports are painting a disturbing picture of Seau's final weeks.
According to USA Today Sports, Seau's friends and family tell the publication Junior Seau had trouble sleeping for years. He took powerful sleep aids, not always as directed.
Scripps psychiatrist Daniel Kripke says sleeping disorders are common among people who have experienced brain injury, and taking sleep aids like Ambien can lead to depression.
"They are a cause of depression, not a cure," Kripke said.
According to USA Today, friends of Seau say he would often take a sleeping pill and drink alcohol. Kripke says Ambien and alcohol can be a deadly mix.
"Any sleeping pill combined with alcohol is many times more dangerous," he said.
Friends of Seau who work out at a gym in Oceanside would not go on camera, but told News 8 Seau would have so-called "breakup parties" in crowded restaurants for girlfriends he didn't want to be with anymore. The owner of The Gym says a month prior, Seau had a breakup party for on-again, off-again girlfriend Megan Noderer. Noderer made the frantic 911 call from Seau's house. Seau's friends think relationship problems may have lead to possible depression as well.
News 8 also spoke with the Oceanside Police Department. They are still waiting on toxicology results, which would show if Ambien was in Junior's system.
