SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A woman is hospitalized and her two cats are dead after her home went up in flames late Tuesday night.

An off-duty Del Mar firefighter who lives nearby rushed in to help, after the fire ignited around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on 49th Street in Allied Gardens.

He pulled the woman from the home before fire crews arrived. She is being treated for smoke inhalation and is expected to recover.

Firefighters say the flames spread to the backyard, but they were quickly put out.

"There weren't any difficulties. We had a little exposure to a fence in the back and shed. We received additional calls, some people thought additional houses were on fire, which they weren't. We were able to control that. The fire went out relatively quickly," said Battalion Chief Dan Froelich with San Diego Fire Rescue

Officials estimate there was $300,000 worth of damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
