RAMONA (CNS) - A 19-year-old man was in custody Tuesday on suspicion of fatally injuring an 8-month-old girl while babysitting the infant at a home in Ramona on Independence Day, authorities said.
David Humberto Ortiz was arrested Monday and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death, according to San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Larry Nesbit.
Ortiz is suspected of fatally injuring Liliana Velasquez in the 2600 block of Southern Oak Road shortly before 11:30 a.m. July 4, the homicide lieutenant said in a statement. Liliana died at Rady's Children Hospital Friday afternoon.
An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death but the report was sealed at the request of the Sheriff's Department.
Last week, Cal Fire spokesman Nick Schuler told reporters paramedics called to the home were responding to a report about a child who had fallen.
