Suspected drunk driver slams into telephone pole, kills passenger

VALLEY CENTER (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver crashed into telephone pole east of Valley Center, killing a passenger, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

Salvador Leon, 30, of Valley Center, was driving a 2004 Toyota Scion east on Valley Center Road, east of Queensbridge Road, about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, with two passengers inside, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

Leon lost control of the car for unknown reasons, and the passenger side struck a telephone pole, which killed the front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old Valley Center man whose name was unavailable early Sunday, he said.

The driver and the other passenger suffered what the CHP called moderate injuries and were taken to Palomar Medical Center.

Bettencourt said alcohol was suspected in the crash, and detectives were expected to ask for criminal charges against Leon.
