ENCINITAS (CNS) - A 23-year-old Carlsbad man who apparently fell asleep at the wheel was killed when his car veered off Interstate 5 in Encinitas and struck a tree, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.
The driver of a 1996 Honda Accord was headed south near Birmingham Drive about 11:15 p.m. Saturday when he was spotted swerving, as if he were falling asleep, before the car went off the shoulder and hit a tree, according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.
The driver, whose name was unavailable, died at the scene.
