LA JOLLA (CBS 8) - About 40 blue whales were spotted off the coast of La Jolla on Monday, by a veteran pilot and aerial photographer.
Eddie Kisfaludy was flying about 15 miles west of La Jolla, looking for tuna and yellowtail on behalf of some local sport fishermen, when he made the sighting.
Kisfaludy said the blue whales were feeding on huge amounts of krill off our coast this week. The group is among the largest pod of blue whales ever spotted in local waters.
Blue whales are the largest creatures on earth, growing up to 100 feet long. They usually aren't spotted off San Diego's shores, but have been seen more frequently off Southern California during the late spring and summer.
