ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Detectives Wednesday sought to identify and track down a gunman who shot a 17-year-old boy in the head, gravely wounding him, as he drove a van along a North County thoroughfare.
The victim, whose name was being withheld, was heading east in the 1100 block of East Mission Avenue in Escondido when he was struck by gunfire shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday. The vehicle veered out of control and struck a telephone pole, snapping it in half, Lt. Chris Wynn said.
Another teen who had been in the van fled while medics were tending to the wounded boy, he said.
The victim was reported in critical condition at Palomar Medical Center Wednesday morning.
Witnesses said the shooter was on foot and opened fire from the roadside. They described him as a Latino teenager, with short, spiked black hair and bloodshot eyes. He was wearing baggy blue pants, a white T-shirt and white shoes.
Police eventually caught the youth who ran from the van and arrested on an unspecified warrant, Wynn said. A motive for the shooting was unknown.
