SAN DIEGO (CBS 8 / CNS) - A 3-year-old New Mexico boy who was struck by a pickup truck near Point Loma died early Friday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
Arthur Roan, of Vanderwagen, N.M., was in San Diego with family to attend his older brother's graduation from Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the county medical examiner's office reported.
The boy wandered away from his family's hotel room about 7:25 p.m. Thursday and onto Nimitz Boulevard near Rosecrans Street where he was struck by a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 54-year-old man, according to the medical examiner's office and San Diego police.
The child was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center where he underwent surgery to control bleeding then was transferred to Rady Children's Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the pediatric intensive care unit just before 2 a.m., the medical examiner's office said.
Meanwhile, about an hour after that accident and less than a mile away, a young female driver crashed her car into a tree in the front yard of a home on the 3300 block of Canon Street in Point Loma. She was declared dead at the scene.
No one else was in the car at the time.
According to witnesses, the young woman had been driving erratically leading up to the crash, and at times reached speeds of 65 miles per hour on residential streets.
