SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Del Mar's richest and most prestigious race, the 22nd annual $1 million TVG Pacific Classic, will be held Sunday with a capacity crowd of 40,000 expected.
Game On Dude is the 5-2 morning line favorite in the 1 1/4-mile race for 3-year-olds and up. The 5-year-old gelding will be ridden by Chantal Sutherland, who is trying to become the first female jockey to complete the Southern California "triple" of winning the Santa Anita Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup and TVG Pacific Classic.
Richard's Kid is the second choice at 7-2. The 7-year-old is seeking to become the race's first three-time winner. He won in 2009 and 2010, but missed last year's race because he was in Dubai.
The expected field of 10 also includes Dullahan, the third-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby.
"I think Game On Dude is possibly the best horse in the country now and he's training better over this track than he did last year," Del Mar oddsmaker Russ Hudak said.
"The two horses from South America (Amani and Suggestive Boy) have shown great promise since they've been here.
"Dullahan was beaten less than two lengths in the Kentucky Derby, his wins have been on Polytrack and while he's taking on older horses for the first time, we've had 3-year-olds win this race before."
