CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA (CNS) - Sheriff's officials Monday sought the hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a man as he was crossing a street in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.

The man appeared to have been crossing at the intersection of Villa Cardiff Dr. and Windsor Rd. about 11:30 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by the unknown vehicle and thrown to the ground, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office and sheriff's officials.

The driver fled before deputies arrived, according to sheriff's Deputy Brenda Sipley.

A passing motorist found the man lying in the intersection and called 911, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Deputies found the man in the northeast corner of the intersection. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Sipley said.

The Medical Examiner's Office identified him only as a Hispanic man between 30 and 40. His hometown was unknown, officials said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Sipley at (760) 966-3568.
