Man accused of killing brother in hit-and-run

VISTA (CNS) - An Encinitas man was arrested today on suspicion of murdering his older brother over the Labor Day weekend by running him down with a pickup truck on a Cardiff-area roadside following a quarrel.

Homicide detectives took 37-year-old Camilo Ruiz Perez into custody Wednesday morning in connection with the death of 44-year-old Joaquin Perez, sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said.

Late Sunday evening, the siblings were at an Encinitas home and got into an argument, after which the older brother left and walked off into the neighborhood, according to Giannantonio.

A short time later, Camilo Perez allegedly got into his pickup, caught up with his brother at Windsor Road and Villa Cardiff Drive and intentionally ran over him before continuing out of the area.

The suspect soon returned on foot to where the mortally injured victim was lying, made a 911 call to report a "person down" and fled, Giannantonio alleged.

The lieutenant declined to disclose what led investigators to deem the fatality a homicide and identify the victim's brother as the suspected killer.

Camilo Perez was booked into the Vista Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
