JACUMBA (CNS) - A large truck went off Interstate 8 near the San Diego-Imperial county line Sunday and spilled diesel fuel into the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The semi truck went off the westbound freeway, on the uphill grade approaching Mountain Springs Road, about 4 a.m. A second truck driver stopped and set out cones shortly after, according to CHP reports.
The truck was detached from an axle and stopped on an embankment about 10 feet from the road, the CHP said.
A CHP dispatcher said an unknown amount of diesel fuel spilled from the disabled rig and a Hazmat coordinator was contacted.
The contamination was contained to the left lane, which was closed, the CHP said. The freeway median there is more than one mile wide, as the two roadways are in separate canyons in the steep, rocky mountains.
