SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - More than two dozen Navy personnel are teaming up with the San Diego Food Bank to help those struggling around the county and honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
On Tuesday, the 30 uniformed sailors packed 900 35-pound food boxes, which will be delivered to seniors living in poverty. That amounts to about 27,000 pounds of food.
Participants say that the significance of the day and the community they live in played a large role in their volunteering.
"Especially in San Diego. It's a great community. They continually give to us and welcome up with open arms. They have for years. It's important for us to keep that relationship strong here in San Diego," one participant said.
Before the packing began, a ceremony was held to remember the thousands who died in the attacks, as well as those who have died serving our country.
