City of Del Mar launches wayside horn system

DEL MAR (CBS 8) - The City of Del Mar has launched its new wayside horn system.

Starting Friday, trains will no longer be required to sound their horns as they pass through crossings.

The wayside horns are angled speakers fixed at a crossing that focus sound toward approaching traffic only. Some say the quieter horns are a welcome change, as long as safety comes first.

"It sounds to me like a very very good idea. I think they need to have a warning, so, if this is a little quieter, then that must be a good compromise," former San Diego resident Howard Aisen said.

"Part of the price of living near the Del Mar Beach," former San Diego resident Nancy Dans said.

The project was funded by Del Mar residents and the North County Transit District. City officials say the technology will serve as a pilot for the rest of the region.
