SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight San Diegans who competed in the Summer Olympics, including four medalists, were honored Tuesday by the San Diego City Council.

The council declared Tuesday to be "San Diego Olympians Day."

"We are absolutely proud of your hard work and your accomplishments," said Councilman Carl DeMaio, who issued the proclamation.

The honorees included women's soccer defender Rachel Buehler, a gold medalist; Brady Ellison, who won a silver in the team archery event; Meb Keflezighi, who competed in the marathon and won silver in 2004; BMX cyclist Nic Long; high jumper Jamie Nieto; race-walker Johnny Nunn; Kelly Rulon, who won gold as an attacker on the women's water polo squad; and Alice Schmidt, who took part in the 800-meter.

All but Nieto attended a short ceremony at City Hall.

DeMaio said the athletes were as an inspiration to youth.
