Fire destroys yacht at Harbor Island

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire of unknown origin destroyed a 45-foot yacht at a Harbor Island marina today and damaged an adjacent dock, with the damage figure put at more than $700,000.

The non-injury blaze in the 2000 block of Harbor Island Drive erupted shortly after 11 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke rising from the burning 1974 Chris-Craft motorboat, named "Escort." It took the personnel about a half-hour to fully douse the flames, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

Investigators set the monetary losses at $600,000 to the gutted vessel, $100,000 to contents and about $30,000 to the dock to which it was moored. Several nearby boats also were slightly singed before they could be moved away from the ablaze yacht, Luque said.

The cause of the fire, which resulted in no known harbor pollution, was under investigation.
