Restaurant raises $6000 to help wounded sheriff's detective

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A sheriff's detective, wounded in a shootout in Lakeside last week, is now able to breathe on his own.

The Sheriff's Department says doctors removed Detective Ali Perez's breathing tube Monday. Perez is also able to open his eyes and is responding to questions.

Over the weekend, Pernicano's Restaurant in El Cajon held a fundraiser for Perez. They raised a little more than $6,000 and presented the money to the Sheriff's Association Monday.

"We don't want them to lose their home or not be able to pay their kid's tuition or anything like that. We're trying to raise those funds to help ensure that does not happen," explained Dave Schaller with the Deputy Sheriffs' Association.

Perez is expected to need medical treatment for several months.
