VISTA (CNS) - A man who had sex with a 12-year-old Escondido girl he met through a smartphone-based social media app was sentenced Thursday to 270 days in jail and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Christopher Bradley Nutt, 24, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to a felony charge of being a person over 21 having sex with a person less than 16 and a misdemeanor charge of using a child in pornography.
As part of his five-year probation, Nutt will have to attend sex offender classes and his Internet usage will be monitored, said Deputy District Attorney Patricia Lavermicocca.
Nutt's attorney, Dan Greene, said the case highlights the need for parents to closely monitor which Internet sites their children have access to.
The victim's mother reported her missing around 2 a.m. May 27.
Investigators quickly interviewed the girl's friends, checked her cellphone records and learned she'd be with a man she met online, according to Escondido police.
Later the same day, officers went to a house in the 1000 block of Nightingale Place and found Nutt and the girl in a bedroom, police said. Nutt, who had recently moved from San Dimas to Escondido, was arrested and the girl reunited with her parents.
The smartphone-based social media app used by both the defendant and victim was Skout. Following Nutt's arrest, company officials shut down the portion of the app that was designated for the under-18 crowd.
