2 arrested after attempting to steal pit bull puppy

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - The alleged theft of a pit bull puppy Saturday prompted its owner to chase the suspected thieves' car through a Chula Vista neighborhood, drawing gunfire until the suspects crashed into a tree and ran off, police said.

The suspects, identified by police as 23-year-old Arturo Deharo and 18-year-old Lizeth Garcia, were later arrested, according to Chula Vista police Lt. Eric Thunberg.

The chain of events began when the pair allegedly snatched the puppy from a residence near the 200 block of Moss Street shortly before 11 a.m. then sped off, Thunberg said.

The dog's owner got into his tan minivan, gave chase and caught up to the pair at the intersection of Moss Street and Third Avenue, where one of the suspects opened fire, Thunberg said.

The gunfire continued until the driver crashed into a tree in the vicinity of Moss and Naples streets. The suspects then ran off and left the puppy in the wrecked car, Thunberg said.

The puppy was taken out of the Jetta shortly before it caught fire, Thunberg said. Neither the puppy or its owner were injured, Thunberg said.

The owner then went home and called police, who arrested Deharo and Garcia without incident. Neither suspect was injured in the crash and both were booked into jail.
