SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fight behind a Lincoln Park apartment complex escalated Wednesday into an assault that left a man fatally injured.

The fracas in the 300 block of South 47th Street was reported shortly before 11 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Dispatchers monitoring a 911 call heard men's voices saying, "I'm going to get you," "Let me up" and "You all jumped me," SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.

Arriving patrol officers found a 44-year-old man on the ground in the area, unconscious and unresponsive. Medics performed CPR on him at the scene before taking him to Paradise Valley Hospital in National City, where he was pronounced dead, Hassen said.

Witnesses reported seeing the victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, being beaten by two other men. The assailants were gone by the time police arrived, Hassen said.

The reason for the fight was unclear.
