SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was shot in Hillcrest early Monday and suffered life-threatening wounds, police said.
Several 911 callers reported hearing gunshots in the area of 1400 Upas St. around 2:30 a.m., according to San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert.
Officers arrived to find the man in the street critically wounded and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the homicide lieutenant said in a statement. Paramedics took him to an area hospital.
The man's identity was not immediately known. Herbert said the man was white and appeared to be 24 to 25 years old.
The shooter was at large as detectives attempted to determine what prompted the shooting.
"Detectives and forensic specialists are processing the scene for evidence and looking to identify and interview any witnesses," Herbert said.
