SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - More than 13,400 people ran or walked in the 16th annual Komen San Diego Race for the Cure Sunday at Balboa Park to raise money for breast cancer research.
The event, on the west side of the park near Sixth Avenue and Palm Street, included an expo and a tribute to survivors of the often deadly disease.
Nearly 12,000 people had registered for the race by Friday afternoon, according to organizers with Komen San Diego. Registration started at 6:30 a.m. for those who were not already signed up.
Sunday's Race for the Cure raised more than $1.2 million, and that figure will rise in the weeks ahead because fund raising efforts continue until December 7.
The Susan G. Komen 3-day, 60 mile walk, takes place in San Diego November 16-18.
Some of the footage in Jeff Zevely's video report was shot using a GoPro camera.
