Search for attempted robbery suspect in La Mesa

LA MESA (CNS) - A robber left an attempted robbery empty-handed when a clerk at a Cricket Wireless store went for the exit door rather than the cash drawer, La Mesa police said Sunday.

An employee at the Cricket Wireless, 7014 University Ave., told police a suspect entered the store at 6:27 p.m., walked behind the counter brandishing a large knife, announced he was robbing the store and demanded cash, La Mesa Police Sgt. Greg Runge said.

"The clerk ran away from the suspect and left the store," Runge said. "The suspect then fled the store as well and was last seen running southbound across University Avenue."

No money was stolen and the store clerk was uninjured.

The suspect was described as an Hispanic male in his 20s about 5-feet-7 inches tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds. He was wearing a red sweater, beige or light khaki pants and a brown baseball hat.

The suspect concealed his face with a black scarf wrapped around his head.

The suspect's weapon was described as a 12-inch long butcher knife, police said.

Police asked anyone with information to call La Mesa Police Department at (619) 667-1400, or Crime Stoppers' anonymous toll-free line at (888) 580-TIPS, or www.sdcrimestoppers.com. Callers can remain anonymous and be eligible for a $1,000 reward with information leading to an arrest in this case.
