SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Scripps Health held a special ceremony Monday honoring its veteran volunteers and employees.
As part of the luncheon, Scripps CEO Chris van Gorder showed a video he made of World War II sites he visited while with the Army in Normandy.
Van Gorder says he was particularly moved by one of his employees, Sidney Shaw, an Encinitas resident and World War II veteran who just turned 90 last week.
"It just struck me, literally, on Friday that we don't have that many more times to say thank you to our World War II veterans. I always think that it's unfortunate that we only celebrate our veterans one day out of the year, when in reality we ought to be celebrating them 365 days out of the year," van Gorder said.
Shaw was also presented with a special challenge coin given only to those who display service above and beyond.
