SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - News 8's military expert, retired Marine Brigadier General Mike Neil will be honored this week for his efforts to help find a cure for Huntington's disease.
Neil will receive the Guthrie Award Friday night at the 12th annual Celebration of Hope Gala for the San Diego Chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Huntington's is a fatal, genetic brain disorder
The fight against the disease is personal for Neil. His mother-in-law died of Huntington's and his wife carries the gene, although she has not shown any symptoms.
"We have a chance to beat this disease, unlike other diseases such as Parkinson's, they know the gene that causes it, so we're close to finding a treatment. We just need the money to continue the research," said Mike Neil 2012 Guthrie Award Honoree.
Friday night's gala will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt and includes dinner, dancing and a live auction.
