SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The bomb squad blew up a suspicious device at Crawford High School in El Cerrito.

Crews were called to the school just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after campus police officers found a grenade near the bottom of a large metal container.

The bomb squad x-rayed the device, but couldn't determine if it was a live grenade, so they blew it open. When they examined the remains, they found the grenade wasn't dangerous, but it had been modified.

"There was no powder inside, so it didn't pose any explosive situation, although the fact that it had been modified, that is a potential crime," San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Maurice Luque said.

School had already let out for the day when the grenade was discovered, and fire officials say students never in danger.
