Students robbed at gunpoint near SDSU, USD

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities were on the lookout Thursday for three young men who robbed two students at gunpoint near two college campuses.

The men robbed the woman in the 5200 block of East Falls View Drive about 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to SDSU police. They took her backpack, cell phone and wallet, but left her unharmed, according to a police statement.

About an hour later, a student was robbed at gunpoint across the street from USD in Linda Vista. The victim reported one of the gunmen was wearing a Spiderman mask. The robbers got away with the student's cell phone and wallet.

San Diego police say they don't know yet if the robberies are related, but campus police at SDSU say these crimes are on the rise.

"There has been an increase lately throughout the county of San Diego in theft of Apple devices, iPods, iPads, that type of thing. It's not germane to us, it's throughout the county," Sgt. Steven Harshaw said.

Harshaw wants to remind students to think safety first. Walk with a friend, and don't be so focused on your phone that you're not paying attention to your surroundings. But if you are targeted by thieves, don't resist.

"If somebody approaches you with a weapon, just do what they say. Nothing is worth anybody getting hurt over," he said.

Anyone with information about the robbery was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
