Crews re-lining water pipe in San Carlos to extend use, save money

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Crews with the San Diego Water Authority are re-lining 3.5 miles of water pipe in the San Carlos area.

The six-foot diameter pipe runs under Jackson Drive, between Mission Gorge Road and Lake Shore Drive. Workers are installing a steel pipe inside the old pipeline, then welding the two together.

The original pipe was installed in 1976, and was supposed to last 50 years, but it started to fail much earlier than expected.

"Due to the corrosive soil and mishandling of the pipe during installation, the external coating on the pipe cracked, allowing rust to occur which then allowed the pipe to failure," construction manager Brent Fountain said.

The project, which will cost $21.2 million, is expected to extend the life of the pipe by at least 75 years.

The work started in August, and is expected to go through next summer.
