CAMP PENDLETON (CBS 8) - Loud booms coming out of Camp Pendleton were all part of an artillery training exercise Friday.
Marines participating in "Exercise Steel Night" launched rockets, fired cannons and mortars all at the same time. It was the culmination of a 10-day field training to prepare troops for battle.
"It is good, that's the sound of freedom as we like to say. The training that Marines do here make them ready to fight for real when they go to Afghanistan or anywhere else in the world the president sends us," Lt. Col J.P. McDonough said.
Marines spend weeks on end doing field training at Camp Pendleton.
