Driver killed, passenger on life-support after single-vehicle crash

EL CAJON (CNS) - A single-vehicle crash east of El Cajon left a 22-year-old El Cajon man dead and an unidentified woman hospitalized on life-support Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash on La Cresta Road near Greenfield Drive was reported to the CHP about 6:40 a.m., although it was believed to have happened sometime late Saturday night, according to CHP Officer Brian Pennings.

Pennings said the man and a female passenger were headed west in a 1981 Jeep when he failed to keep the vehicle on the roadway and it drifted off the right side edge, went into a drainage ditch and struck some large boulders.

The Jeep came to rest on its wheels, but it sustained major front end damage, the officer said.

Both the driver and the passenger were wearing their lap belts only, not their shoulder harnesses, Pennings said.

The man sustained a fatal head injury and died at the scene, Pennings said. His name was not immediately released.

The passenger, who had yet to be identified, was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. She was placed on life support, Pennings said.

Pennings said although evidence indicated alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office would make that determination.

At 6:55 a.m. the CHP closed westbound La Cresta Road, and at 9:37 a.m. the roadway was reported open in both directions.
