Fire at Hillcrest church and preschool investigated as arson

Posted: Updated:

HILLCREST (CBS 8) - A church in Hillcrest, that also runs a preschool, is assessing the damage and cleaning up debris, after being targeted in a case of arson overnight.

Huge flames ravaged a 2-story wooden play structure on the playground of a preschool, which is part of a church, in Hillcrest.

Fire investigators say the blaze was intentionally set, started by an open flame, a cigarette lighter or matches perhaps. They say just after 3 a.m. Saturday, the fire broke out in and around a plastic shed on the property, then spread to the wooden playground equipment, and a storage room next to a classroom.

Fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to the inside of the building and quickly put out the flames.

Robie Evans, Director of Operations for the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego says Sunday church services were not interrupted.

Evans says she doesn't expect an interruption in their preschool schedule either and knows that with the help from community and church volunteers, it won't be long before the clean up and repairs are complete.

The director of operations says the church does have insurance, and so the damage should be covered.

No suspects have been named or arrested in this arson case.
