SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Back in 1988, Naval Medical Center San Diego first opened its doors. On Wednesday, the facility celebrated 25 years of serving San Diego's military community.
A special ceremony was held at the Naval Medical Center to commemorate the hospital's opening and rededication in 1988.
The Balboa Park facility's roots date back to 1917, when it was nothing more than a hospital tent. Now the center is the most technologically advanced Navy medical treatment facility.
"I would like to say thank you to the entire San Diego community for allowing us to continue to care for those in need here in what is not just the geographical heart of the city, but more importantly, the spiritual heart of our San Diego family, Balboa Park," U.S. Third Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Gerald Beaman said.
Naval Medical Center San Diego also serves as a major teaching and research center.
