Woman gets 10 years for deadly DUI crash

Posted: Updated:

VISTA, Calif. (AP) — A mother of four has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a drunken driving crash that killed her fiance and two other people on a San Diego County freeway.

The North County Times says 36-year-old Debbie Sumi of San Marcos cried and apologized to the victim's families during her sentencing last Friday for gross vehicular manslaughter.

Prosecutors say her blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when her Jeep Cherokee rear-ended a stopped car on Highway 78 in Vista two years ago.

Sumi was thrown from the Jeep. Her fiance, Larry Alvarez, died along with two women who were standing outside the other car.

Sumi's attorney maintained during trial that Alvarez was driving.
