Student's threat sends Eastlake High into brief lockdown

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A four-day-old threat by an Eastlake High School student to bring a gun to campus prompted a brief lockdown there Friday until authorities determined the youth had been bluffing.

Administrators at the Chula Vista secondary school notified police about the situation shortly before 10:30 a.m., Lt. Eric Thunberg said.

Within 10 minutes, school-resource officers had determined that the boy who allegedly had made the threat was not even at the campus, according to Thunberg.

Investigators subsequently learned that the student in question had made the statement Monday during a brawl in which one boy threatened to escalate the fight with a knife and another countered with a vow to bring a gun to school.

One of the involved youths stayed away from Eastlake High this morning due to the firearm claim, instead showing up a different school, the lieutenant said. When teachers there questioned him, he "came clean" about the threats, prompting the short security escalation at his school, Thunberg said.

It was unclear if the boys might face any punishment over the episode.
