ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - A teacher at the Escondido Community Child Development Center is being honored after her CPR skills helped save the life of one of her students.
Last November, five-year-old Marques Cabrera suddenly collapsed in Katie Grippin's classroom. Grippin performed CPR on Marques until paramedics arrived.
At the hospital, he was diagnosed with a very rare heart condition. Doctors say without Grippin's help, Marques likely would have died.
"I still have the image of it, but it's like, you did it, you did what you had to do," Grippin said. "I feel extremely proud and thankful that he came out of it."
Marques had surgery and has recovered enough to return to school. The teachers say he's back to his usual, rambunctious self.
