Graduation day for canine companions

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Friday was graduation day for 10 dogs from the Canine Companions for Independence organization.

For the past nine months, the pups were trained in commands designed to make everyday life easier for people with disabilities. On Friday, the dogs' trainers turned over their leashes to their new companions.

Volunteer puppy raisers also turned in the puppies they've been fostering so the dogs can start their training.

"We also have about 45 puppies that are turning in today, so they will begin their six months of professional training," Becky Miller said.

Canine Companions for Independence holds four graduations a year. This is the first of 2013.
