SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Police have arrested a suspected car thief and a possible accomplice after a high speed chase Sunday morning.

The driver has been identified as San Diego resident John Cummings.

He led La Mesa police on a chase early Sunday after they spotted the stolen Honda Civic at a motel.

Officers lost sight of Cummings during the pursuit, but a tip led them to his mother's Del Cerro home on Twain Avenue, where he was arrested.

Cummings allegedly stole the Honda Civic from San Diego State on Friday night.

"My car was just gone. I made sure I didn't have a memory lapse and looked up and down the parking structure. And couldn't find it," said car thief victim Aaron Liu.

A woman was in the car with Cummings during the chase, she was also arrested at his mother's home.

Police did not release her name.
